28 Sep 2010 SEPT 27, 2010 A PERKY, PET PHRENDLY EVENING
 |  Category: News  | Leave a Comment

It was a dark and stormy night as perky Dawn Gartin not only called the meeting to order as our stand-in Sgt at Arms, but she was also our Toastmaster for the evening.  Her theme was “What Makes a Good Friend?”  This was doubly appropriate as both of our speakers spoke on what has become known as man’s best friend.  A good friend is a good listener, according to Dawn.

Cindy Cannon took us on a fun day’s outing with her devoted dog friend Bubba in her speech, Bubba Noooooooo! It was a fun trip meeting Bubba in all his disobedient glory.  Bubba, with his pork chop jowls, smashed in nose, uneven flopped ears and slim drooling tongue, took us all on a wild outing.  Things went reasonably well until Bubba met up with a bee, got stung, and had a huge allergic reaction.  The emergency car ride to the vet, the policeman, and Bubba’s hallucinations from Benadryl had us laughing and glad we’d come along on such a fun trip.  A great, well told story Cindy.

Dawn brought us back to what makes a good friend by asking us “Are you approachable?”  With that, she introduced Iris Grimm’s speech; Help us Make Georgia a Pet-Friendly State. Iris came armed with sad stats.  Over 644,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in Georgia each year.  Dogs are kept in the shelter an average of seven days before they are euthanized.  The tough economic times have made it necessary for some families to turn their pets into shelters.  A gentleman named Steve Monahan has developed a “Meals for Pets” program.  He receives pet food donations and helps families in economic down times feed and keep their pets.  Now they have gone even further in their rescue efforts.  With the purchase of 70 acres of land near Rome, Georgia, they have formed Green Pets America Eco Shelter. Here animals can be rescued, rehabilitated, and matched for adoption.  Iris’ goal is to encourage donations to support these animals in an eco-friendly environment in which they can live, socialize, and find homes.  Her real heart’s desire is to get these innocents off death row.

After a six minute break and learning from Dawn that a good friend does not gossip, we went into Table Topics.  Members drew from some sort of children’s game cards with but a single word and picture of the word on them.  Yep, six of us, (Bob, Ericka, Keith, Merrilee, Christina and Tom) somehow spoke on carrots, a vase, flowers, a bathtub, a bed, and finally apples!

Paul Johnson was our clever, wonderfully entertaining, general evaluator for the evening.  Tom Nixon was grammarian and had chosen the word, or ate, no, it was or eight, silly us, it was orate. Thanks to Tom, members had a great time punning around and using the word.  Our timer needs a battery, so Claudia used Dawn’s IPOD thing to time the speakers.  Our camera is still missing so Keith Schroder recorded Iris’s speech on her cell phone; great proof of our club’s total flexibility.  Dawn’s final “What is a good friend” was “A good friend is selfless.”

President Cindy Cannon conducted a brief business meeting in which we approved the purchase of a digital cam recorder.  Paul and Iris will be handling this.  The meeting adjourned, umbrellas snapped open and members, now perky, pet loving phriends, dashed out into the still dark and stormy night.

Members!  Check the schedule from Dawn!  I’ve already claimed Shea as my back-up speaker for the evening.  Keith Schroder is Toastmaster for the meeting so confirm your role with him.

Speakers:  Rich Hart, Tom Nixon and Shea Ellison

GE: Mark Parham  Gr. Richard Kirby   Tr: Cindy Light  CP Iris Grim

Our camera is still missing so if you want to be recorded, arrange to bring your own or a borrowed camera.

Ericka Butler, I’d love it if you could handle the minutes for the meeting.  How I regret having to miss a meeting with Keith at the helm!  We  should think about recording entire meetings for those who have to be absent.  When we find our camera, of course.

Our Toastmaster for the evening was our busy, ever polished, published and professional, Steve Cohn.  Tonight he used the book, Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten to share tidbits of wisdom with us.  Share you toys.  Play nice; don’t hit; say you are sorry, to name a few.  David Flach, was welcomed as our first speaker of the evening.  David has been temporarily on inactive status so chose to do an icebreaker.

David used “The Great 2 x 4 of Wisdom” to introduce himself as a young and ambitious Toastmaster.  He explained how he’d previously judged other club members in the light of how they would help him advance in his speaking endeavors.  Then he introduced us to Carl of the unmatched socks, coke-bottle glasses, comb-over, and clinging potato chip crumbs.  Carl and his son were Dave’s 2 x 4 of wisdom.  David’s five to seven minute speech was Carl’s selfless lesson to his son, “You don’t have to be best to improve.”  How wonderful to learn life’s lessons while improving speaking skills!  Well done, David.

Next we were treated to our old friend Viny, aka Jon Schwartz.  His “Web 2.what?” and bodda-bing, bodda-bang . . . or something like that, translated to “Get off your butts and do something!”  Viny gave us a list of things we no longer get off our butts and do, such as changing the TV channel and communicating.  He believes all this social networking has become antisocial with little face-to-face communication.  He suggested new, more descriptive names for facebook, twitter, and my space. He urged us to slow down, step back and explore face-to-face communications.  I say, bless Toastmasters and Jon for honing this skill.

Toastmaster Steve shared a Crayola Bomb book quote and sent us for some face-to-face visiting around the evening’s snack table.

Next up, Cindy Light, spoke on “You are a special gift from God.”  She explained that each of us are special gifts and that we should wrap (clothe) ourselves like the beautiful gifts we are.  Sometimes when we don’t present ourselves at our best, we miss opportunities to find and fulfill greater spiritual callings.  She told beautiful vignettes of Sarah, Malinda and Cathy.  Don’t let money or waiting for the right time cause you to delay becoming the beautiful gift you are.  With a sweet Bodda Bodda Bing, Cindy told us to love ourselves the way we are!  (Oh yes, remember how we kissed and told our little hand we loved it and then noticed how it grew!)  Totally inspirational, Cindy!  Thanks.

TM Steve closed by telling us what he personally learned in Kindergarten.  He did a Chubby Checker routine on the play ground and learned he loved an audience and to perform.  Thanks Steve for putting together a 2 x 4 of a meeting!

Following the general evaluation, President Cindy Cannon announced that Paul Johnson had placed 2nd in the humorous speech contest.  Way to go, Paul!  Great news from John Mathews (now at the Weather Channel) they are expecting a “2 legged pup” on October 20th.  (Remember how he rehearsed his club speeches in front of his dogs?)  Huge congratulations to John or as Viny would say, “Bodda Bodda Bing!”
